Johann Sebastian Bach’s masterwork, the St. Matthew Passion, encompasses a deeply moving alto aria titled “Erbarme dich, mein Gott” (translated as “Have mercy, my God”). This piece encapsulates the sorrow experienced by Peter in the garden, as he denies any knowledge of Jesus on three separate occasions. Imbued with the grace of a lilting 12/8 time signature, the music expresses the rhythms of the Baroque-era siciliano dance. Playing this piece enables me to feel Peter’s anguish and his heartfelt plea for divine compassion.
Many thanks to @ThomasSummerfield for recording this arrangement with me for piano duet. Thomas is currently a 2nd year student at the University of Melbourne studying a BMus in Piano Performance. This was recorded in the “Adamshurst Ballroom” in Albury.
