No.1 from 8 Pièces Modales – Jean Langlais

I’m certainly going through a period of musical taste where Langlais is heavily involved. This time we move to his collection of modal pieces, each without a specific title—just numbered 1 to 8. They all differ in character and volume (so there are some louder selections!). Today you will hear this beautiful, atmospheric opening piece which could be used as an organ prelude or in recital as a palette cleanser, before a fiery French Toccata to finish!

I have recorded this piece on the Heppenheim Hauptwerk sample set from Saint Peter’s Church Heppenheim in Germany. The organ was built by Wilbrand in 1997. The instrument has 43 stops on 3 manuals and pedals.
